My year review is on the best band of the year, which happened to be my favourite band Arctic Monkeys.

Arctic Monkeys is a Sheffield (England) band, featuring Alex Turner, Jamie Cook, Andy Nicholson and Matt Helders. Universally loved for their conversational, colloquialism-heavy lyrics (bordering on the pretentious); solid rock sound and accented vocals. The band was formed around 2002, and released two UK No. 1's in 2005. Their album, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not', was released on 23 January, 2006, and criticised by some for displaying a man smoking on the cover.
They are the biggest thing to come out of Sheffield since...steel. They rock the british-new-music-scene’s socks off.
Take my strong advice and don`t hesitate to listen to them. You won`t be disappointed!

Cutest guy

To mind Alexander Shevchenko is the cutest guy of the year. Not only is he smart and intelligent, but also extremely serious. This outrageous seriousness (especially in political and law matters) makes him funny. I couldn't help laughing during our Law English classes when he made speeches in which he accused Bush and Blair of international crimes. He probably doesn't even realize himself how cute and naive he is at such moments!

I'm going to tell you a few words about the best student of the year. In my opinion Marina Baryshnikova, the third-year student of group 10 (IL) of our faculty deserves this status. First of all she is an extremely bright and talented girl. She loves studying and often tries to get more and more knowledge about various spheres of science. She attends her classes regularly and is often ready for them. She takes part in all possible student conferences and prepares exceedingly interesting reports. Marina always gets the best marks (10 and 9) for her exams. The girl is keen on foreign languages (French, English, Spanish). In fact she speaks French as her mother tongue (although it is her second foreign language on our faculty). Marina is fanatically industrious: she is able to study all day long plus half a night and sleeps no more than 4 hours. Furthermore Marina is the prettiest girl on the Earth. She has beautiful green eyes, gorgeous hair, slender figure, lovely white teeth, charming leaps. She is always extravagantly dressed. Moreover she doesn't have any bad habits (she doesn't smoke, etc.). She lives a healthy way of live (does physical exercises, keeps the diet – that's why she has such a fascinating figure). Marina is a kind-heated, generous, frank, polite girl. She is going to get a driving license soon.
Marinochka is the most attractive and clever girl in the world and I want her to become my wife (Why? Because I, Alexander Shevchenko, LOVE her!!!). But at present she is going to leave our motherland – the Republic of Belarus – and to immigrate to Belgium. As a matter of fact, my friends, her friends and I disprove her of this deed. Furthermore her departure harms the interests of our Republic, because it is crucially important for Belarus to have such a highly qualified specialist. Marina must be put in the list of Belarusian National Values, which, in accordance with law, must be especially protected. So, dear Marina, stay in Belarus and become my wife!!!

Shevchenko Alexander

Best Movie

Pavel Lungin’s last film "The Island" (the winner of the festival of Russian cinema 'Moscow Premiere' held in Moscow from 25 August to 2 September) is a penetrating drama of sublimation of the soul: the monk Anatoly, a poor-spirited youth who was made by fascists to shoot his captain to save his own life, acquires a gift to heal people. Two parsons, actually Anatoly’s two only friends (brilliantly played by Viktor Sukhorukov and Dmitri Dyuzhev) by the end of the story realized he succeeded in healing them, too. Pyotr Mamonov plays the lead role is this movie. The film is a parable, combining the realities of Russian everyday life with monastic ritual and routine. “The Island” is undoubtedly the most prominent work of this year: even before its general release it was predicted to kindle great interest.

I can say in my firm confidence that the best film is V is for Vendetta.
Two months ago I had the opportunity to go to that movie.
The basic theme of the movie is resistance against a totalitarian government, and what methods are actually legitimate to use in that resistance. The action scenes are all you could reasonable ask for, with flying knives, guns, impeccable martial arts techniques. To my mind, the film is rather political. That is why it was banned in many cinemas and had been on only for several days.

Pop star Madonna brought her show 'Confessions' to Sparrow Hills, Moscow on September 11th 2006.
The world famous pop star, known for her stunning concert performances, appeared in Russia for the first time on her massively acclaimed Confessions world tour, attended by over half a million fans in the USA alone.
After a more than a year of negotiations, VimpelCom finally managed to persuade Madonna's managers to put Moscow on the Confessions Tour map.The show arrived in Moscow after its European leg, which saw 8 sell-out concerts in London's famous Wembley Arena.
"I plan to turn the whole of Moscow into one big Madonna-dance floor" the superstar announced after the conclusion of negotiations between her managers and VimpelCom.
"This concert marks the beginning of a long-term musical project for Beeline, details of which we will release soon," commented Alexander Izosimov, general director of VimpelCom.
"Our company always tries to offer the best to its clients, and Madonna is among the best on the world .''

The best movie

Christophe Gans film «Silent Hill» is a story difficult to understand at the moment. It contains
the great number of assimilated puzzles so you are to think a lot while watching film.
The movie begins with Rose and Christopher searching for their adopted daughter Sharon who sleepwalks. On the way to Silent Hill Sharon was lost. Rose appears in the town
of falling ash and fog. And she hardly could recognize that she effectively became a ghost…
Due to the specific plot the movie became popular very soon. It was released to theaters on April 21, 2006 in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, and Ireland. France, Belgium, Hungary, and Greece also saw April releases. The film was later released in 19 other countries in 2006 which include Russia, Germany, Italy, Japan, and Mexico. For strong horror violence and gore, disturbing images, and strong language the film was forbidden in many countries. As of December 11, 2006 the film has grossed $46,982,632 domestically and $97,568,022 total worldwide. As for me it is the best horror movie of the year. Just see and die for.

The Best Dressed/ The Best Course

My "Year-in-Review" is about the most intensive impression of the year, which appeared to be connected with our Family Law tutor.
He is young and tough. He is brilliant at presenting his subject to the audience. His speech teems with qoutations of Bulgakov and Oscar Wilde. Perfectly trained voice and impertubable appearance add to the impression.
By the way, he is one of the best-dressed male individuals i have ever met. With his cell phone to match his tie perfectly, with his greatly cut suits and fashionable grips, he could easily be decorated with a label of "dandy" to correspond his image.
Nevertheless, he is a professional. One of the best ones. He embodies success and self-perfection. In fact, that was the best about his classes: the stongest motivating impulse to move up and ahead. The aim of life is self-development. To realize one's nature perfectly - that is what each of us is here for.
To put it in a nutshell, let's turn to Oscar Wilde, who perfectly mentioned:We teach people how to remember, we never teach them how to grow. Let me thank God for all the teachers, who have courage to give us some more clues to self-prfection. Wisdom. And, hopefully, satisfaction.

THE BEST VOCALIST
It was difficult to decide who or what deserves to be THE BEST in the year 2006.
Nevertheless I made decision to nominate Robbie Williams as the best Vocalist of the Year.
Maybe it will seem to you prosaic but music turns the life on. And this singer helps to get over any obstacles. He always fits any mood.
Fascinating music, sensible words, delightful voice, by and large - he deserves.

Christian Bale is my favourite actor. He's not only extremely gifted as an actor but by all reports is a decent human being with a real concern for our planet. It's always nice when your hereos turn out to be worthy of your respect. I have seen every single movie he has been in, but my favourite movie of Christian's is All the Little Animals. I think that Christian is one of the young talented actors of our day and I'm sure he'll go far. However I do feel that he is slightly underrated and is not being offered the film leads he needs to push him further. Other than that I think he's great!

Sensation of the year
The story of Austrian teenager who was held captive for 8 years before she escaped shocked the whole world. To my mind, it’s one of the most thrilling and exciting events of the year.
Natasha Kampusch, said to be pale and to weigh less than she did as a 10-year-old, managed to flee her abductor on Wednesday after he moved away to take a phone call as she vacuumed his car, it has emerged.
Wolfgang Priklopil, her captor threw himself under a train within hours of her escape.
She is reported to have wept inconsolably when she was told the man she had to call "master" was dead. Police suspect she may have been suffering from "Stockholm Syndrome" - a condition where some abductees gradually begin to sympathize with their captors.
People who work with her prove that is sensible and eloquent. She kept a diary, where she expressed feelings and emotions that disturbed her. She promised herself that one day she would be free.
Although the event is neither of international scale nor great importance, it strengthened human’s faith in justice and courage.

I can’t even decide which one from the maintenance staff members deserves this honourable title more. On the list are:

• the elevator operator, who is especially frequently remembered by the students on Saturdays which turn out to be extra PE lessons due to the necessity of rushing up and down the stairs with your tongue on the back

• the Xerox-boy, who doesn’t differ so much from a sloth cause you have to queue up about half an hour just to make one copy, so when you finally reach the desirable goal, gnashing and in the white rage, you realize that you are on the verge of commiting murder or at least of maiming “the drag”

• the old swabber, who is no doubt a good guy but still daily threatens to belabour us with his broom for throwing butts on the front steps.

The Best Movie

From my point of view the best movie of this year is Pavel Lungun’s film “The Island”. The story starts from the times of the Second World War and the events happened on the small island in the White Sea, totally covered with pieces of coal. A young man Anatoliy was made by fascists to kill his captain in order to save own life. After the war Anatoliy became a parson in a small church, but the sin of his misdeed treated his soul. It was found that he was gifted in healing people and he became well-known among the local habitants. The character was brilliantly played by Pyotr Mamonov, a former leader of a music band “Zvuki Mu”, a talented and charismatic actor. He played not a role of a boring priest who prays during all the film, but showed his character from unusual and interesting side: Anatoliy jokes on his friends (who are parsons too), doesn’t obey the rules of the church and so on. The names of the lead actors (P. Mamonov, D. Dyuzhev and V. Sukhorukov) made it clear to predict that the best movie of the year would be “The Island”. And so happened :on the festival of Russian cinema 'Moscow Premiere' held in Moscow from 25 August to 2 September this film won the first place.

Cutest actress – Anastasia Zavorotniuk

She is unbelievably beautiful…Her stunning figure, scintillating smile and exquisite features make males go mad. Envious persons hint at her sexuality while speaking about her dizzy career as an actress. They add that Anastasia is so treacherous and ambitious that ruined her family for fame and money. “A pretty face is not a passport. It’s just a visa and it runs out fast” – is their main argument.

“The Nanny” is extremely ladylike, elegant and smart. The colleagues point out her attractive personality and a marvelous sense of humour. The actress is super-efficient at work and without doubt gifted. She is extremely popular with teenagers. They try to copy the way she move and speak.

Anastasia has chosen a bright, alluring way instead of colorless, dull life. She’s always been risky, decisive and independent. Maybe that is the key to her success and popularity.

To my mind the best album in 2006 was “Future Sex/Love Sounds” by Justin Timberlake. After the first single "Sexyback" hit the airwaves in July, everyone knew the second album would not be “Justified, Part Two”. “Justified” was his coming out party after saying "bye, bye, bye" to the awful and nostalgic N’SYNC. It was a hell of a party, but ever since his single "Cry me a River," fans couldn't help but wonder if Timberlake was overachieving. It's like once you go boy band, you don't go back. But the release of “Future Sex/Love Sounds” puts those concerns to bed. Timberlake comes back to affirm his place at the top of pop music, and to let his subjects know that his reign will be long and prosperous.

I would like to present my favourite album of the year 2006. This is 'The Last Resort' by Denmark's talent Anders Trentemøller. The double CD pack came out last summer on the world famous Poker Flat Records imprint.

Anders is a unique talent in today's music world. He took underground dance floors all around the world by storm last year with funky minimal techno-tracks like 'Physical Fraction’ and ‘Polar Shift’, and was voted “Best Newcomer” by many of highly respected issues.

This summer Trentemøller delivered his debut album on Poker Flat, "The Last Resort" – a beautifully crafted that will leave you breathless. The 13 instrumental tracks together form a kind of a musical story, almost like the soundtrack of a movie. It manages to capture a whole range of emotions in subtle melodic miniatures, dreamy ambiences, dusty beats, deep dub-tracks and driving groove-excursions. An ever-changing kaleidoscope of colours and moods, ‘The Last Resort’ without a doubt contains Trentemøller’s best work to date.

Although it’s definitely an electronic album, it also incorporates live-drums and percussions, some guitars and other acoustic instruments to create a more vivid and organic feel. And what really surprised personally me is that on ‘The Last Resort’, Trentemøller moves away from the dancefloor and instead produces a versatile album that’s especially great for home listening (or listening in the car, on your i-Pod etc etc), but ever since his first release, it was clear the young producer from Copenhagen was able to fuse great melodies and chord progressions with subtle, yet driving beats.

The first CD (basic package) contains no vocal tracks, it's all about subtle and intelligent productions, deep and melancholic-minded. And if you want to hear the other, more driving and banging side of the artist (as well as some huge vocal tracks) - go and get the 'limited edition' version of the album (two-CD's edition). Together these two discs show the two sides of Anders Trentemøller – the introspective melancholy man versus the outgoing, funky techno-minimalist. A fantastic accomplishment from one of the greatest producers of this new century.

Stay tuned.

To my mind, the best spot to hang out is "Rakovskiy Brovar" beer restaurant.
It`s the one and only restaurant in Minsk with small brewery. It is quite big: two flours inside and some tables in the open air. They produce and serve five sorts of beer, both light and dark. 0.5l costs aproximately 1.5 USD.

The menu is rich of different fish and seafood meals which fits well with beer. They cook also traditional belarusian dishes. Quite tasty.

I like to visit "Rakovsky brovar" for its atmosphere, which happens to be amazing. I find it one of the best places to meet up with friends for a simple chat or a big party.Never disappointes me!

There are no doubts that Belarusian Presidential Elections which were held in March of 2006 have been on the top of agenda of numerous European TV channels, radio stations and newspapers. This political event has influenced perception of the Republic in international community like no other event of the year. Highly important role of such a huge political event as presidential elections is true for any civil society. That is why I decided to write this essay about a new political figure on the horizons of European politics.
Alexander Milinkevich was born in 1947 in Grodno. After graduating from the University of Grodno, he got his post-graduateate diploma in the Institute of Physics of the NASB. Between 1980 and 1984 he was in charge of the Faculty of Physics. He also served as a docent at the University of Drodno between 1978 and 1980, and then from 1984 on to1990. At that time he also started to cooperate with local city authorities as a chief of one of the committees. Soon he reached the rank of vice-mayor of the city. In 2001 he was the chief of staff of Siamion Domas, one of the opposition leaders running for president in the 2001 presidentioal elections in Belarus. In October of 2005 he was chosen by the United Democratic Forces of Belarus as the joint candidate of the opposition in the presidential elections of 2006. In October 2006 he was awarded the Saharov Prize by theEuropean Parliament.
In October 2005, roughly 900 delegates from various political groups met in the capital to pick a single candidate from among various political parties and groups. Milinkievič won over three other political leaders at the meeting.
In the past, the delegates often failed to be sufficiently united to field a single opposition candidate, but they stressed the importance of supporting Milinkievič's campaign in order to unseat President Lukashenko, who has run Belarus for over a decade. Belarus' opposition forces last tried to field a single candidate in 2001.
In the Belarussian Presidential election of 2006, official regime results gave Milinkievič 6% of the vote against 83% for the incumbent Lukashenko. In January 2006 Milinkievič was invited to Paris by the French government. He met with Minister of foreign affairs of France, and gave numerous interviews to Western media, including a TV interview to Euronews. Earlier, he had already met the new Polish prime minister, and the president of Lithuania. In February 2006 he also met the President of the European Commission, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, Javier Solana and several other top European politicians. His campaign received the backing first of the Polish government and later that of prominent EU officials.
I’m of the opinion that the role of Milenkevich as an active political fugure will be increasing. We should simply pay attention to the international Mass Media updates))))

My year review is on the best movie of the year.
The movie I'm presenting is contraversial, hilarious, mind blowing, political etc.

Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of Kazakhstan is all that.

I thought the film was great... the ending could have had more kick to it and been a bit more drawn out, but I was laughing so hard throughout that I barely noticed. The nude scenes and the naked wrestling repulsed me. But there were so many other scenes where I felt like I was going to pass out from the pure ridiculousness of it all. Again, Cohen cleverly draws out the ignorance of so many people from the "U.S. and A." and we're left shocked, humbled, more aware, and having stomach pains from the hilarity of how he does it. He again proves what people will do for the camera and how people's true colors shine when they meet someone with more radical beliefs than their own. Even after seeing the movie for the third time I ended up saying something like "wow wow wee waaaaa"!!!

You must see it.

Sergey Sidorsky: the politician of the year.
Some say that 2006 was a challenging year for the current Prime-minister of Belarus since according to the article 106 of the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus the Government resigns before the newly elected President and the candidates for the position of the prime-minister as well as for the other seats in the Government are reconsidered for the new appointments. But if we think of the functions that the Prime-minister of Belarus is expected to carry out and how genuinely fit Mr. Sidorsky is for the position we can conclude with all certainty that Sergey Sidorsky had no grounds whatsoever to fear replacement and all the discussion of the matter was evoked by mere boredom of those still not having enough faith in the political stability in the country.
The aforementioned article of the Constitution states that for the President to appoint the Prime-minister the consent of the House of Representatives is required. Out of the 105 representatives present at the session 103 voted for the nominee and only 2 – against. Such a degree of trust in the Prime-minister from the House of Representatives (one of the powers and obligations of which is to control the Government) should provide for even more effectiveness of the executive branch.
Mr. Sidorsky is the sixth Prime-minister of the sovereign Belarus and as far as the period of time that he has been the head of the Government is concerned, only Sergey Ling can create some competition for him. Mr. Ling was the Prime-minister of Belarus for about three years (19.02.1997 – 18.02.2000) while Sergey Sidorski became the Prime-minister on December 19, 2003 and is still running for the record.
Hopefully, all the personal and professional skills of the best politician of 2006 combined with the experience of the prime-minister and the country’s political figure #2 (never less, never more) will also prove to be worth praising in the year to come.

My year review is about the best event of the year. I am afraid to look a little bit selfish, but for me the best event of the year was getting a job. It was some kind of a dream for me because i have always wanted to be economically independent. I understand that it was hard for my parents to for my flat in Minsk and to give me some pocket money in addition. But now I have a job and my parents can afford a christmas travel.
I work as a assistant of the lawer in the magazine "The Planet". I am completely happy with my boss, with my salary and with the staff.I think this event worth beeng called the best.

Best movie.

I would like to nominate the documental film “Zidane, a portrait of the 21st century” as the best movie of the year.
It seems rather unusual to nominate a documental film, but the movie I draw your attention to is obviously not an ordinary documental film. It is a unique midway between the work of portrait artist and an action movie for a broad public. The film duration is 90 minutes – the duration of World Cup football match. During the whole 90 minutes seventeen synchronized cameras where focused on Zinedine Zidane, the brightest football star, owner of two Golden Ball awards. The film, though concerned with football, is not about football itself, it is about an artist at work, whose tool is not a brush but a ball. An excellent harmony of delicious cameraman work, rich complex music and fantastic dribbling of the main and the only actor turned the film into a complete mystery.
“Zidane, a portrait of the 21st century” was shown within non-competitive film demonstration at Cannes film festival 2006 and I do believe that it was worth it.

I suppose that the greatest thing about this year is that it is SO difficult to decide on the only thing or nomination worth to be mentioned because for me personally this year has been saturated with sparkling events, interesting communication, fabulous places and vast experience – which would have been enough for installing a new nomination (smth like “the Year of the year” – but unfortunately it’s a nonsense and I don’t want to challenge anyone’s common sense (including my own) lol:).

Anyway if to head straight for the topic I think I would like to back up the Christmas mood, escape being on a slippery grounds and talk about the thing that inspires my feelings, upholds my mood and helps me to wake up at 6 a.m. every morning (which is strictly speaking alone deserves all possible gratitude, praise and applauds) and this heroic phenomenon is the new album of the Placebo – the Meds which was released in June, 2006. To my mind it has been the best reaction on life and feelings so far. What really appeals to me about the band in general and this work in particular is that they are always true, emotional and expressive, they are always different but always close to you. What’s truly remarkable about Placebo, however, is that they have always gone hand in hand with a rare hunger for musical inventiveness, personal discovery and storytelling nous, they’ve also taken daring steps into fresh musical territory. Plus, in 2006 they celebrate the 10th anniversary of the band  I hope that the next decade of their work will bring with it more enthusiasm and progress and rejoice the part of the universe which listens to them a lot of new great songs able to keep one’s mood on the high point all day long.
In the end, all hidden treasures start shining! ;)

I would like to wish you all Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, a Great every single Day of life and the absolute Harmony in your Soul!!! Enjoy it! May the forth be with you!!!

Maynard Keenan
Not Yet a Legend, Not Yet Dead…

Maynard James Kennan is a vocalist for Tool as well as a frontman of A Perfect Circle (APC) band. He tends to be involved both in his Tool project and APC. Though, this fact doesn’t seem to spoil his enormous contribution to world’s music.

He doesn’t pretend to be a legend; he doesn’t pretend to be one of those sophisticated and glamorous looking stars and he doesn’t pretend to be appreciated by others. It seems like he acts according to his own sacred wishes and desires, no matter what the people’s demands are. He is one of those few singers who didn’t become a sacrifice of modern show business.

In spite of the fact that he doesn’t appear and comply with vile and incompetent society’s “orders”, he has never been one to disappoint his fans. He definitely shows so many things that music can do to a person.

The music that he can make is so moving, the voice is so intense, and the melody is so mystical.
He makes you feel things that you never thought music could make you feel. His words are powerful and unobtrusive at the same time. His voice takes you to a whole new world and his lyrics like no other help to stand up and face the facts of life.

He has a way of going into a person’s soul and helping them help themselves. This is what I admire about him. His captivating performance can carry you through various feelings and emotions acting much like the calm in the eye of a hurricane.

If there were more people like him, the world would be a more honest-minded place to live in.

I couldn't help commenting on the topic "Best Vocalist" as I'm kind of a music fan. No friend of mine will be surprised to discover that my review is about Dima Bilan and his triumphal ascention on the top of musical world in the outgoing year 2006.
Not only do I admire this young performer's undoubtful talent and exceptional vocal abilities, but also his personal qualities are worth praising. Despite the fact of his flash-like ascent as Russian songster (Russian Music Awards - Best singer), and his commendable achievements at international musical events of the passing year such as the Eurovision (2nd place winner) and World Music Awards (Best Russian Performer), Dima still posesses his brilliant humorous attitude to shaw-businness and to himself (unlike most pug-nosed "stars") and self-criticism (he "knows where he came from", as JLo sings), as well as easiness and friendliness to anyone around him, and that particular cheerfulness and childish happiness he is recognised for. Dima is a fine example of a person who focuses on the bright side of life, though being a celebrity is not a piece of cake, unlike we the audience take it, and demands much exertion, resulting, as a rule, into lack of privacy in life and absence of "private life" in particular.
So I'm happy to send my compliments to my fovourite singer on his brilliant achievements and wish Dima Bilan further success in all aspects of his life because his hard work deserves being met with approval.

The Best Show

'Mamma Mia!' is a musical with a disco beat, featuring the music of the Swedish singing group ABBA. The setting is a Greek island where 20 year old Sophie is due to be married. My friend and I saw this show on June, 2006 and we both absolutely loved it. It was, simply stated...a FUN AFTERNOON. Most of the cast performing on this date were understudies, however, the performance was still well done and worthwhile. They made the music work with an actual plot that could be followed and was sweet and entertaining. Laugh out loud, dance in your seat and aisle, smile all the way....Well worth the money spent. I have never seen more interesting performance in my life.
